Ask HN: Recommend Me Best Linux Laptop
3 points by heasketh on Jan 14, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 14 comments
HN, I am thinking of buying new Laptop and I will be running Linux on it. Can you please recommend me good Laptop that runs Linux well(Laptop can come with any OS but must run Linux very well)?

It could be better if these criterias are fulfilled: 1) Best performing AMD processor(or is Intel good?) 2) No Nvidia. Good Intel igpu or ryzen igpu will suffice. but it must support VAAPI very good for hardware acceleration. 3) Good Battery life 4) Good Keyboards and Touchpad 5) Good number of modern ports

I have been very happy with this product. I would have preferred an AMD Ryzen system, but the design and configuration characteristics of the Framework product are excellent.

This is where laptop design should be going.

Disclaimer: Am fussy about screens, keyboards, ports, and longevity. Significant past product experience with IBM, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, Acer.

13 inch screen is very small for me. I would prefer atleast 14 inch. otherwise, laptop looks very good.

Does anyone here have a Lemur Pro from System76? I want to buy a new laptop for development and considering the Lemur Pro, Macbook Pro (Intel), or a Dell. I have had a good experience with my current Dell Inspiron 7460: it is compatible with Ubuntu out of the box. However, it started to fail after four years of use: if you move the lid, it may get frozen. I do not know if a Clevo computer will be reliable to be my new computer for work.

I would recommend the Thinkpads: it's rock solid and used by a lot of Linux contributors, so the hardware is well-supported and the installation is documented

My Thinkpad experience has been a nightmare. I bought a new ThinkPad one year ago and it has been an absolutely terrible experience. It freezes up every 2-3 days requiring a hard restart. I've sent it in to Lenovo for repairs twice and the freeze-ups continue. Every time I send it in I have to reformat my entire computer then reinstall everything only for the issues to persist. I'm about to purchase another new computer because I need a reliable working computer and my Thinkpad failed. Lenovo sold me a lemon. I hate this ThinkPad so much and it was a complete waste of money.

Not all Thinkpads are born the same : you have the workhorse : T14, T15 P14, X13 that are a bit heavy and have very good Linux support and maintainibility, like add ram, Switch SSD, or so. An the fancy ones X1, X12, yoga, that are slimmer, but less Linux compatible and less maintainable.

any particular brands you recommend?

Thinkpad is a Lenovo product line.

Previously it was an IBM product line.

I mean, any particular models from ThinkPad line that you recommend?

Anything made before 2016 will serve you well.

The #1 problem with Linux and new laptops is s3 sleep/suspend is no longer supported because M$ no longer believes in it. Stay away from Dell. I just got a new Dell that has 0 support for this. Even though there's an option in the BIOS, it does nothing. I'm forced to use hibernate instead of suspend.

Dell, System76, Lenovo ThinkPads are some vendors you can check that have Linux laptops or are very compatible.

You might want to wait for the new Intel Alder Lake processors or upcoming AMD options. Early benchmarks look promising with a decent jump in performance and efficiency and they should be rolling out in laptops the next few months.

I have a xps 9310 with ubuntu. It works well after figuring out all the configurations.

Battery and trackpad are garbage but I use external mouse and chargerm
