It's not short sighted. China recognizes that America has a stranglehold on its future and is working hard to free themselves from western IP regime. They will build their own, regardless. In fact, they've been working on it for a while.
All that the isolation did was slow them down. It was smart.
Frankly, I don't like the Chinese government or their industry, but they deserve the same rights to self-determination that the west has enjoyed for decades. They are investing heavily in that capability. I don't blame them at all.
If china were as benevolent as the west I would agree. One can argue about the benevolence of the west for a long time, but there is very little debate about what China wants to do.
People who know what China is doing say that China should not be as autonomous as the West has been in the past.

Benevolent as the west? Really? Tell that to: Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Libya, India, Palestine… I don’t even want to go on because the list of places screwed over by the west is too long. To say “one can argue” is so handwavey you might’ve broke your wrists.
