Ask HN: Interest in desktop or mobile app to find “cloud” files and data?
1 point by dotancohen on Sept 21, 2023 | hide | past | favorite
I prefer to keep my files and data on my own devices, but recently some "cloud" services have been looking very attractive. However, my concern is that I simply won't even remember that I have files or data on these services. I am not referring to cloud storage filesystems, rather applications (such as Genius Scan) that store their app data on their own servers (the cloud) in addition (or in lieu of) on one's mobile device.

My line of thinking is a mobile app or desktop app that identifies the presence of these of potentially-cloud storing applications (via adb for the desktop app) and somehow either integrates a way to access those data and files, or at least makes the user aware that such data and files (potentially) exists.

I do understand that I'll be playing the "add the new cloud provider" game quite often, and that users will expect support for such new providers to be done regularly. My initial thought is to use downloadable lists, not unlike adblockers, that the community can contribute to - or that I can easily update via some structured language e.g. JSON.

Is there interest in such an application or service? Has the community any other feedback that I should consider? Thank you!
