Underpay? Top researchers at places like Harvard do very well from what I understand, especially if they consult on the side or sit on boards.

We’re talking several hundred thousand.

That’s not enough?

the comment says 'underpay ... relative to say Investment Bankers, VCs or mgmt consultants.'

the point as I see it is that if scientists are of strategic importance, they should be compensated accordingly to prevent the risk of bribery/defection - the same reason companies justify high pay to these other jobs to 'retain their talent'.

isn't it well known that you make less money in academia than in business? The trade off is job security.

I'm sure he could go lead a lab at Exxon for millions but the moment he doesn't deliver he's fired.

"several hundred thousand" per year is a less than the $750,000 that China was willing to pay according to the article.

So the argument is we should pay professors at least as much as the China are willing to bribe them with?

You’d have to ask the original author for clarification on what their argument is.

My interpretation of the argument is that labor markets are heavily driven by economic incentive. I can’t say I’ve seen much data to the contrary.

Charlie Lieber is the head of the fucking Harvard Chemistry department. He's not lacking in prestige or pay, I guarantee you that.

Incredible opportunity! If I wasn't familiar with Lambda School it would be hard to believe. I think that shows just how good of a deal it is.

Wow incredible start! I’m interested in developing products that help liberate students.

Thanks for the quick breakdown. Reading now...college is a subject I’m endlessly fascinated by.

I upvoted the post because I’m interested in the topic. But is Trump actually helping China and/or pushing them to become better via a “trade war”?

A trade war esentially forcing China to be more self sustained. Depending on the definition there are few type of trade wars. One specific event was to ban Intel to ship CPUs for the Chinese supercomputer. The result was a Chinese CPU and Intel financial meltdown. Tariffs are equally bad too. Other instance of this political manovering was a Japanese car production company moving production from the US to China. The list goes on and on. Trump is committing a political suiicide with these.

awesome site!

I knew it! But seriously I’ve heard about this “ trend” for years but anecdotally most people I know don’t consume random videos on social networks.

Vids from friends?

That seems to be a different story.

Very cool. I enjoyed the first tournament myself and am looking forward to entering the second!

Just read the article. Seems like an awesome product! I have two questions:

1. Can I get a code (dkermitt@gmail.com?

2. The landing page of Journal is great. How did you go about designing it?

Completely agree. People put to much blame on social media networks. Though I like Twitter and dislike Facebook they are not the core problem.

Great historical references as well. The Founding Fathers, though incredible people, were extremely partisan.
