Germany has a pretty consistent climate. Doesn't really matter where you live. Of course, that's an oversimplification, but if you're new to Germany and wonder "oh, what's the weather going to be here?", the answer pretty much is "similar to the rest of the country".

You could then look at a map of France and think, ah, similarly sized country, probably also has a consistent climate, but that's not true. Southern France is very different from Northern France. But Germany's climate is pretty uniform.

Yes, there is a difference, you are right. I don't have hard numbers at the moment (typing from the phone) but from looking it up quickly, the sun's intensity varies from about 950 kWh/m² to about 1.200 kWh/m² between north and south Germany. So, what OP described will generally work in any part of Germany.


We're processing tenders for the construction industry - this comes with a 'free' bucket sort from the start, namely that people practically always operate only on a single tender.

Still, that single tender can be on the order of a billion tokens. Even if the LLM supported that insane context window, it's roughly 4GB that need to be moved and with current LLM prices, inference would be thousands of dollars. And that's just one (though granted, a very large) tender.

For the corpus of a larger company, you'd probably be looking at trillions of tokens.

While I agree that delivering tiny, chopped up parts of context to the LLM might not be a good strategy anymore, sending thousands of ultimately irrelevant pages isn't either, and embeddings definitely give you a much superior search experience compared to (only) classic BM25 text search.


I work at an AI startup, and we've explored a solution where we preprocess documents to make a short summary of each document, then provide these summaries with a tool call instruction to the bot so it can decide which document is relevant. This seems to scale to a few hundred documents of 100k-1m tokens, but then we run into issues with context window size and rot. I've thought about extending this as a tree based structure, kind of like an LLM file system, but have other priorities at the moment.

Embeddings had some context size limitations in our case - we were looking at large technical manuals. Gemini was the first to have a 1m context window, but for some reason its embedding window is tiny. I suspect the embeddings might start to break down when there's too much information.


For anyone unfamiliar, construction tenders are part of the project bidding process and appear to be a structured and formal manner in which contractors submit bids for large projects.


That's a good point, but I doubt that Sonnet adding a very contrived bug that crashes my app is some genius move that I fail to understand.

I kinda agree with both of you. It might be a required abstraction, but it's a leaky one.

Long before LLMs, I would talk about classes / functions / modules like "it then does this, decides the epsilon is too low, chops it up and adds it to the list".

The difference I guess it was only to a technical crowd and nobody would mistake this for anything it wasn't. Everybody know that "it" didn't "decide" anything.

With AI being so mainstream and the math being much more elusive than a simple if..then I guess it's just too easy to take this simple speaking convention at face value.

Agreeing with you, this is a "can a submarine swim" problem IMO. We need a new word for what LLMs are doing. Calling it "thinking" is stretching the word to breaking point, but "selecting the next word based on a complex statistical model" doesn't begin to capture what they're capable of.

Maybe it's cog-nition (emphasis on the cog).


What does a submarine do? Submarine? I suppose you "drive" a submarine which is getting to the idea: submarines don't swim because ultimately they are "driven"? I guess the issue is we don't make up a new word for what submarines do, we just don't use human words.

I think the above poster gets a little distracted by suggesting the models are creative which itself is disputed. Perhaps a better term, like above, would be to just use "model". They are models after all. We don't make up a new portmanteau for submarines. They float, or drive, or submarine around.

So maybe an LLM doesn't "write" a poem, but instead "models a poem" which maybe indeed take away a little of the sketchy magic and fake humanness they tend to be imbued with.


Depends on if you are talking about an llm or to the llm. Talking to the llm, it would not understand that "model a poem" means to write a poem. Well, it will probably guess right in this case, but if you go out of band too much it won't understand you. The hard problem today is rewriting out of band tasks to be in band, and that requires anthropomorphizing.

A submarine is propelled by a propellor and helmed by a controller (usually a human).

It would be swimming if it was propelled by drag (well, technically a propellor also uses drag via thrust, but you get the point). Imagine a submarine with a fish tail.

Likewise we can probably find an apt description in our current vocabulary to fittingly describe what LLMs do.


Humans certainly model inputs. This is just using an awkward word and then making a point that it feels awkward.

And we are there. A boat sails, and a submarine sails. A model generates makes perfect sense to me. And saying chatgpt generated a poem feels correct personally. Indeed a model (e.g. a linear regression) generates predictions for the most part.

We're very used to "all models are wrong, some are useful", "the map is not the territory", etc.


No one was as bothered when we anthropomorphized crud apps simply for the purpose of conversing about "them". "Ack! The thing is corrupting tables again because it thinks we are still using api v3! Who approved that last MR?!" The fact that people are bothered by the same language now is indicative in itself. If you want to maintain distance, pre prompt models to structure all conversations to lack pronouns as between a non sentient language model and a non sentient agi. You can have the model call you out for referring to the model as existing. The language style that forces is interesting, and potentially more productive except that there are fewer conversations formed like that in the training dataset. Translation being a core function of language models makes it less important thought. As for confusing the map for the territory, that is precisely what philosophers like Metzinger say humans are doing by considering "self" to be a real thing and that they are conscious when they are just using the reasoning shortcut of narrating the meta model to be the model.

I have other thoughts which are not quite crystalized, but I think UX might be having an outsized effect here.


In addition to he/she etc. there is a need for a button for no pronouns. "Stop confusing metacognition for conscious experience or qualia!" doesn't fit well. The UX for these models is extremely malleable. The responses are misleading mostly to the extent the prompts were already misled. The sorts of responses that arise from ignorant prompts are those found within the training data in the context of ignorant questions. This tends to make them ignorant as well. There are absolutely stupid questions.


What about they synthesize?

Ties in with creation from many and synthetic/artificial data. I usually prompt instruct my coding models more with “synthesize” than “generate”.

I didn't think of prediction in the statistical sense here, but rather as a prophecy based on a vision, something that is inherently stored in a model without the knowledge of the modelers. I don't want to imply any magic or something supernatural here, it's just the juice that goes off the rails sometimes, and it gets overlooked due to the sheer quantity of the weights. Something like unknown bugs in production, but, because they still just represent a valid number in some computation that wouldn't cause any panic, these few bits can show a useful pattern under the right circumstances.

Inference would be the part that is deliberately learned and drawn from conclusions based on the training set, like in the "classic" sense of statistical learning.


A machine that can imitate the products of thought is not the same as thinking.

All imitations require analogous mechanisms, but that is the extent of their similarities, in syntax. Thinking requires networks of billions of neurons, and then, not only that, but words can never exist on a plane because they do not belong to a plane. Words can only be stored on a plane, they are not useful on a plane.

Because of this LLMs have the potential to discover new aspects and implications of language that will be rarely useful to us because language is not useful within a computer, it is useful in the world.

Its like seeing loosely related patterns in a picture and keep derivating on those patterns that are real, but loosely related.

LLMs are not intelligence but its fine that we use that word to describe them.


It will help significantly, to realize that the only thinking happening is when the human looks at the output and attempts to verify if it is congruent with reality.

They certainly do act like a thing which has a very strong "System 1" but no "System 2" (per Thinking, Fast And Slow)


This is a total non-problem that has been invented by people so they have something new and exciting to be pedantic about.

When we need to speak precisely about a model and how it works, we have a formal language (mathematics) which allows us to be absolutely specific. When we need to empirically observe how the model behaves, we have a completely precise method of doing this (running an eval).

Any other time, we use language in a purposefully intuitive and imprecise way, and that is a deliberate tradeoff which sacrifices precision for expressiveness.


It does some kind of automatic inference (AI), and that's it.

I personally find that description perfect. If you want it shorter you could say that an LLM generates.


We can argue all day what "think" means and whether a LLM thinks (probably not IMO), but at least in my head the threshold for "decide" is much lower so I can perfectly accept that a LLM (or even a class) "decides". I don't have a conflict about that. Yeah, it might not be a decision in the human sense, but it's a decision in the mathematical sense so I have always meant "decide" literally when I was talking about a piece of code.

It's much more interesting when we are talking about... say... an ant... Does it "decide"? That I have no idea as it's probably somewhere in between, neither a sentient decision, nor a mathematical one.


Well, it outputs a chain of thoughts that later used to produce better prediction. It produces a chain of thoughts similar to how one would do thinking about a problem out loud. It's more verbose that what you would do, but you always have some ambient context that LLM lacks.


I mean you can boil anything down to it's building blocks and make it seem like it didn't 'decide' anything. When you as a human decide something, your brain and it's neurons just made some connections with an output signal sent to other parts that resulting in your body 'doing' something.

I don't think LLMs are sentient or any bullshit like that, but I do think people are too quick to write them off before really thinking about how a nn 'knows things' similar to how a human 'knows' things, it is trained and reacts to inputs and outputs. The body is just far more complex.


I wasn't talking about knowing (they clearly encode knowledge), I was talking about thinking/reasoning, which is something LLMs do not in fact do IMO.

These are very different and knowledge is not intelligence.


To me all of those are so vaguely defined that arguing whether an LLM is "really really" doing something is kind of a waste of time.

It's like we're clinging on to things that make us feel like human cognition is special so we're saying LLM's arent "really" doing it, then not defining what it actually is.

Seems like they just threw this at gpt with no system prompt at all? I mean, gpt-4o really isn't a strong model these days, but certainly the answer will not be very useful without a good prompt that hopefully an app designed around actual therapy would come with...

With a good system prompt, a modern LLM tends to be much, much better than that.


I recommend reading the paper. They provide the system prompt that they used:

Cool, I'm glad that the likelihood that an LLM will tell me to/assist me kill myself is based on how good my depressed ass is at prompting it.


I see your point. Let me clarify what I'm trying to say:

- I consider LLMs a pro user tool, requiring some finesse / experience to get useful outputs

- Using an LLM _directly_ for something very high-relevance (legal, taxes, health) is a very risky move unless you are a highly experienced pro user

- There might be a risk in people carelessly using LLMs for these purposes and I agree. But it's no different than bad self-help books incorrect legal advice you found on the net or read in a book or in a newspaper

But the article is trying to be scientific and show that LLMs aren't useful for therapy and they claim to have a particularly useful prompt for that. I strongly disagree with that, they use a substandard LLM with a very low quality prompt that isn't nearly set up for the task.

I built a similar application where I use an orchestrator and a responder. You normally want the orchestrator to flag anything self-harm. You can (and probably should) also use the built-in safety checkers of e.g. Gemini.

It's very difficult to get a therapy solution right, yes, but I feel people just throwing random stuff into an LLM without even the absolute basics of prompt engineering aren't trying to be scientific, they are prejudiced and they're also not considering what the alternatives are (in many cases, none).

To be clear, I'm not saying that any LLM can currently compete with a professional therapist but I am criticizing the lackluster attempt.


The typical use case of an API is not that you personally use it. I have hundreds of clients all go through my API key, and in most cases they themselves are companies who have n clients.

We can hold humans accountable though. An AI driving tool, we cannot, not without serious reforms in the entire issue of "corporate veils" - when a human gets behind the wheel despite being knowingly unwell to drive, we lock the human up. With a corporate made driving tool, the insurance pays some money in damages and that's it, no human gets any kind of consequence (at least if there was no intent involved like with Volkswagen's emissions scandal).

And we can (and do) make our cities safer to reduce road fatalities and injuries... Germany for example, even though it has Autobahns with unlimited speed, has about ~2800 fatalities per year on a population of about 84 million people. The Netherlands have ~700 road fatalities a year on 18 million people. The US in contrast has ~40.000 fatalities on a population of 340 million - about 4 times the fatality rate of Germany and the Netherlands.

And yes, I am comparing based on populations because the availability of decent public transport is key in reducing vehicular accidents.


That sounds really weird. Why are you keen to hold a human accountable? In my book it's an improvement that autonomous driving is significantly lowering the fatality rate (and we can expect it to decrease further), while simultaneously lowering the direct accountability of single humans. I wouldn't wish anyone the misfortune of being involved in a fatality. The less involvement the better.

Because there are companies like Tesla that keep putting up cars with inadequate technology (cameras instead of LIDAR/radar) or testing on the road and people die as a result of this penny pinching, but no one at Tesla got punished in any way or form for this decision.

On top of that we got the way over the top marketing claims, which routinely leads to one scenario: Tesla drivers engaging the autopilot and playing games on their phones, followed by the autopilot either unable to detect a dangerous situation or disengage once the crash becomes inevitable so it doesn't get counted as an Autopilot incident [1].

At this point, it is willful negligence but we don't have a way to hold Tesla accountable. That is why I want to see high-ranking executives, up to and including its CEO, be held on trial for manslaughter at least.

And hell even here in Europe, Tesla's garbage on wheels causes issues. Both in Germany [2] and Sweden [3] we have had drivers fall asleep for minutes while Autopilot was engaged. This kind of crap was promised to not happen, but apparently someone at Tesla fucked that up. I'm amazed that Autopilot has held up and prevented either driver from actually crashing into something, but the failure of engaging safety mode and come to a safe stop if the driver becomes inattentive for whatever reason is inacceptable, period.

And it's not just Tesla that fails to deal with the damages their shit technology causes. Remember Waymo's honking incidents that went on for weeks [4]? At a minimum, this shit should have led to a) immediate cessation of operation, b) damages being paid to the neighbors who got hit by this noise and c) to a fully transparent audit which uncovers why that happened and what steps were made to prevent a reoccurence.

I'm sick and tired of multi-billion dollar megacorporations using the general populace as a free testbed for their crap instead of doing the proper thing that everyone else does - test on closed-off roads and dedicated test tracks.

My point is, no matter if it is effective or not, I don't want multi-billion dollar companies to use society as a free-to-kill testing ground for their garbage on wheels.

You did notice that I singled out Tesla and Waymo here, correct? BMW for example does stuff the right way - they opened a dedicated test track in 2023 [1] instead of developing on the open road, Volkswagen does their testing with a human safety driver behind the wheel [2], and Mercedes had their Level 3 system actually certified and audited, a worldwide first by the way [3].

I don't have anything against autonomous vehicles, in fact I believe they are a vital solution to providing individual mobility in rural areas that can't ever be economically served by public transport.

All I want is that companies don't outsource costs to society at large. Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen do this, Waymo and Tesla don't. They just do whatever they want, zero considerations and zero effort, while our industry does things by the book and has more expenses as a result.

Uh, Tesla routinely has people wait for months for spare parts [1]. Bad logistics, okay, excusable for a company just a year or two in business, but Tesla is in for well over a decade now. That's also a contributor in why Tesla vehicles cost significantly more to insure [2], with reports of carriers refusing Tesla vehicles at all cropping up even a year ago [3], and all models being listed as "difficult to insure" in NYC [4]. In Germany, the situation appears to be similar, with serious premiums compared to other cars [5]. And that's all before thinking about the current wave of politically motivated vandalism - say some idiot bashes in a window, good luck getting a replacement in time, not to mention the insurance premium hike that's inevitable after filing a claim.

As for defects, well, the build quality of the Cybertruck is so much a meme at this point that I won't waste time researching on it. Steel sheets literally falling off the vehicle. The bloody thing turning rusty from ordinary rain. No matter what, that's inacceptable.

It's not like the criticism isn't well founded in facts. The decision of forgoing LIDAR (by Musk himself, who called LIDAR a "crutch" [6]) has been debated for years, the constant overpromises and underdeliveries led to a multitude of legal issues and SEC trouble, so did the various other issues surrounding lemon laws, general build quality and spare parts availability that I've linked before. And there's a shocking report of someone claiming to be a Tesla IT insider from 2018 that details very shoddy IT practices [7].

And that's before getting to the Cybertruck which is such a dangerous design that it's deemed unsafe to drive on European roads (with the "workarounds" some people found [8] being under serious questioning) or the completely deranged actions of its leader of the last month.

It's cars that are the problem. Who or what is driving them is a distraction.


I don't enjoy stating the obvious, but driving cars is still relatively safe and trains are not a replacement.

Where I live (south germany), for many trips that we can agree are kind of necessary (e.g. daily commute to work), trains can take 4-5x more time. There are other places where it's probably much worse.

There are other reasons why trains are not a replacement, for example cargo. Are you taking home your new cupboard, sofa, or fridge, on a train?


The key thing is, in urban areas you can get by without a car. The big cities obviously - I lived in Munich for well over a decade without a car or a driver's license, and the only point in time where I was happy that my wife has a license was when we had to put our cats to rest - hauling an alive cat in public transport is okay, but hauling a dead cat in public transport, no damn way.

But also the less urban areas... Landshut? Everything well accessible with a bike, get a trailer and you can move around pretty much everything including a Bierbank and a whole ass grill setup - just a day or two ago, someone legitimately posted a photo of themselves, a cargo bike and a full size fridge. During the day, public transit with buses covers even the tiny villages around Landshut, despite the LAVV actually being ranked among the worst public transit systems in Germany.

For these cases get them delivered and hauled by professionals. That's how my wife and I dealt with our new sofas, IKEA charged something around 100€, or Saturn 40€ for our new dryer - a bargain, compared to having to haul that shit on our own.


I live in a city of 250.000 inhabitants that is very bicycle friendly and I estimate has an OK public transport. We recently moved (from <40m2 to >80m2) and in the last weeks we got: fridge, washing machine, dinner table, couch, bed, huuuge cupboards and wardrobe closets, chairs, and many smaller items. And I got myself a rig for sim-racing.

I got all of that used either from friends and family, or from kleinanzeigen.de (that's like Craigslist I think). We saved thousands of euros by getting used quality things, instead of new, possibly poor quality, IKEA items. And we did good for sustainability.. But that was only possible by doing spontaneous 5-20km car rides. For the sim-racing rig, driving a bit farther was necessary.

I also went to the hardware store, which is inconvenient to reach by public transport, more than a couple of times.

I don't see how I would have been able to be spontaneous and cheap like that, without a car, or even with a car that wasn't my own.

If you don't have a car, you're going to have a different life. You will make different compromises. You're not going to live in certain places. You're not going to take certain jobs. You might not visit some of your friends and family as often. You might buy new things just because they will be delivered straight to your home (having someone else drive the car).

Of course your life won't end, you might even enjoy it. But you're not _replacing_ the car by a train in many cases. You're just not doing things that you would otherwise do, and some of these will be done, possibly _need_ to be done, by other people instead.

I still take the bike or train when I can, and I like to walk to places within walking distance -- even 30-60 minutes if I have the time. Admittedly, sometimes I take the car instead of public transport only because it's a little bit cheaper or a little more convenient.

I do use city-wide public transport once in a while, but I don't own a monthly public transport ticket because it probably wouldn't pay off since I have a bicycle and a car. A single-trip public transport ticket for 10 minutes is around 3 Euros. If I need to get somewhere quickly (and back) and take the dog (which isn't free), that's closer to 10 Euros. IMO public transport shouldn't advantage the daily users as much in terms of cost (say 60 Euros/month even for people who may use it > 50 times a month), because it prevents adoption.

Yeah, but you don't need your own car for such things. In Landshut for example, there's a car sharing association, and if we would need to go on such a ride we could just rent a car from them, there's always at least five of them available. And on top of that: a move is like what, a once in a decade event?

A car is hundreds of euros a month (the cost of the car itself / depreciation, maintenance, fuel, replacement parts, insurance, rent for a garage plus of course the fuel). It's an incredible waste of money to own a car if all you're realistically using it is once a year for a trip to Italy and once a year to haul some furniture.

The hardcore "car brains" are the worst - so many people who own a car spec it to the demands of their once-a-year vacation trip (and massively overpay as a result) when a cheap Dacia Spring (~17k new) would be more than enough for their daily demands and they could just go and rent a large car for the vacation trip.

Driving like at least 20 times alone would have cost me what, maybe 1000 bucks? Ignoring all the other trouble that makes it less spontaneous.

Also, those cars specifically aren't the right size to transport furniture in the first place. I also can't wear them down like my own car.

Depends, but there are other situations where you want to move things.

Our car is a relatively cheap one, probably 150-200 euros a month all in (about 50 Euros/month for fuel, 50 Euros/month insurance and taxes, about 3500 Euros for buying and maintenance in 3.5 years, you can expect the average cost of ownership here to go down if we hold it for another couple years). Apart from commute (2x/week), we use it 1-2x per week on average. Plus, we can use it for holidays and other trips.

For the basic person-transport needs we could probably use Car Sharing cars if we need it less than 5 times per month (we need it more), but it would be less ergonomic.


A quick search returned to me a number of 2.5 fatalities per billion (10^9) car passenger kilometers. That's an EU average.
